Developmental Editing

This service is for authors with completed manuscripts who want a check-up on their story. This edit delves into your story to look at the overall plot structure as well as minor rising and falling action within chapters. We break down your characters and follow their development throughout the story. This edit gives attention to dialogue, chapter structure, tone, target audience, and any issues the author feels he or she is having with the story.

What the service includes:

  • A full read-through of your manuscript

  • Corrections to syntax, structure, and title inconsistencies in Track Changes

  • A 3-5 page analysis of your story

  • One courtesy read-through of any newly written sections after the edit

  • A 30 minute phone conversation to actively work out any questions the author may have

What this service does not include:

  • Line by line corrections of grammar, spelling, punctuation

Screenplay Analysis

This edit is for writers with feature-length screenplays who want a check-up on their story. I welcome experienced screenwriters as well as authors trying their hand at a new craft. This analysis will evaluate all aspects of story including: plot, character development, structure, pacing, tone, dialogue, and originality. When reading a script I ask questions such as: Is most of the information shown to the audience or is it mostly told to them? Who is the protagonist and is it easy to understand what their goal is?

Many screenplay reviews out there will provide the writer with a "pass," "consider," or "recommend" to emulate how a competition or studio would evaluate the script. I don't offer this to my writers because it's not about imitating the specific taste or style of a production company, it's about crafting a solid story. Getting a pass or a recommend varies based on where the script is submitted and who reads it. I evaluate screenplays by the same solid set of criteria every time.

What this service includes:

  • A 1-2 sentence log line which "pitches" your story to potential readers. This log line should represent the genre and storyline of your script--if it doesn't represent what you intended, you know some adjustments should be made

  • An evaluation of your script according to the Bechdel Test

  • A 3-5 page in-depth analysis of your story with feedback on how to improve upon any rocky areas

  • A 30 minutes follow-up phone conversation to address any questions the writer may have

What this service does not include:

  • Advice or avenues with which to sell or market your screenplay

  • Work on any screenplay adaptations that are adapted from a source other than the author's original work

If you have enlisted one service (e.g. developmental editing) and would like to use a second service (e.g. proofreading) for the same manuscript, the second service will be offered with a 20% discount.
